Lauma Mellēna-Bartkeviča – Latvia – Candidacy

STATEMENT OF CANDIDACY FOR EXCOM – AICT/IACT 2021

Being the Head of the National Section of Latvia for almost 3 years, I would like to propose my candidacy for the IATC Executive Committee.  I am a theatre and music critic and researcher, currently working at the Latvian Academy of Music, simultaneously holding a position of the coordinator of the international affairs at the Latvian Theatre Labour Association and co-editor of the theatre website in Latvian kroders.lv.  In terms of recent international activities, I would like to emphasise my work carried out during the pandemic year of 2020: “Contemporary Latvian Theatre 2010-2020. A Decade Bookazine”, which is available in English for all of you.  For the last three years, I have worked a lot to consolidate and improve the Baltic network of theatre critics by involving colleagues from Lithuania and Estonia in common projects, improving regional communication and increasing the Baltic presence on the maps of European and world culture. I plan to keep on this track in the future, in order to replace the interrupted theatre process with relevant information that would increase the understanding, tolerance and awareness within the community of theatre critics.

While the crisis is not over yet, it is time to think of how we – theatre critics – can facilitate humanism and democracy, as well as increase inclusion and tolerance in our own countries and internationally. My strengths consist of fast thinking outside the box, finding innovative solutions. I am a good team player too. Therefore, I would consider it both a challenge and an honour to join in the IACT EXCOM, and to help reshape the future of theatre criticism worldwide in the post-pandemic period. Thank you for your trust!
