The coveted Thalia Prize was offered to distinguished theatre scholar, Hans-Thies Lehmann, in recognition of the scope, the impact and the depth of his research and views on contemporary theatre. The renowned author of “Postdramatic Theatre” was present in St. Petersburg to receive the trophy, an elegant cane designed by artist Dragos Buhagiar and provided by Ludmila Patlanjoglu, Honorary President of the Romanian Section of IATC (Theatre Studies Group).
In her introduction, Margareta Sörenson, President of IATC, acknowledged the importance of Hans-Thies Lehmann’s work for the landscape of theatre worldwide and particularly for contemporary
theatre criticism. Visibly moved by this special moment, Lehmann expressed his gratitude to IATC and highlighted the deep meaning of criticism for theatre as an art form. It is worth adding that Lehmann received the Thalia Prize after personalities like Eric Bentley, Eugenio Barba and Richard Schechner.
