A biographical note of Leandros Polenakis

Theater critic, writer, dramatist, essayist

President of the Greek section of I.A.T.C. (Union1)

I was born in Athens in the year 1945. I studied Law in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. Also studied Anthropology of the Theatre, in L’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (E.H.E.S.S), Paris), under Pierre Vidal-Naquet.  Degree of Doctor by Panteion University of Athens: “The object of value in the tragedies of Aeschylus”.

I speak, read and write English, French and Spanish fluently, also read a little Russian.

I practice theatre critique in the daily newspaper (AVGI), since 1978, having published more than 2.500 critics.

As a writer, dramatist and essayist, I have published 14 books of poetry, prose, History, essays, plays, plus two volumes of selected critics.

Greek and Elizabethan Tragedy are of my main topics, along with modern and contemporary Drama. Mainly, Ibsen, Pinter, Chekhov, Becket, Albee.

I maintain that theatre has a political aspect that cannot be easily denied. I deem that the theatre of speech is more important than other forms, because it can play a decisive role in the awakening of human and social consciousness.
