Following the annual selection and voting, the Russian Association of Theatre Critics has named Kirill Serebrennikov the person of the year for his unprecedented dedication to theatre in circumstances of house arrest.
Theatre and film director Kirill Serebrennikov has been under house arrest since August 23, 2017, being investigated for financial mismanagement related to the art project, The Platform (2011-2014). Prominent artistic personalities and professional associations in Russia and Europe have considered his trial a politically motivated case of selective justice, and called for his release.
During Serebrennikov’s house arrest, two productions that he had started (Così fan tutteatOpernhaus Zürich andBaroqueat Gogol Centrein Moscow) were finally presented to the public and his film, The Summer, was presented at Cannes Film Festival. The balletNureyev, which he has directed, as well as his show Small Tragedies were nominated for the National Theatre Prize, “The Golden Mask”.
