Hasibe Kalkan Kocabay – Turkey – Candidacy

Dear colleagues,

I bring you the warmest greetings from the IATC Turkey Section. I would have been very happy to introduce myself to you personally on the congress stage and to meet you as well. My first acquaintance with IATC was in 1999 when I participated as a young theater critic in a seminar during the Strasbourg Theater Festival, organized by the Association. At that time I had the chance to meet Ian Herbert and Margareta Sörenson.

Turkey, especially Istanbul, had a lively theater life until the beginning of the pandemic, with a selection of 155 plays night after night. Now most theaters are struggling to survive and theater professionals are looking for ways to support them. Some theaters are using the crisis to try out alternative forms and means of expression on a digital level. The digital aesthetics of these productions also pose a new challenge for theater criticism, for which we have to think about new criteria. The digital aesthetics of these productions also pose a new challenge for theater criticism, for which new criteria must be developed. It is our desire to hold an international symposium on this topic.

In recent years, we have held three theater critics’ workshops during the Istanbul Theater Festival. The last workshop was led by Christine Dössel from the Süddeutsche Zeitung. We would be happy to organize a workshop here again.

It is becoming increasingly important for us to follow up on the developments and debates in the world. As IACT Turkey Section to support this is one of our main responsibilities.

Kind regards,

Hasibe Kalkan
