Competition – Critical reflections on Contemporary Chinese theatre

The China Section of the International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC-China, Beijing) invites entries for an international competition for writings, already published in English, related to contemporary Chinese theatre.

THE ENTRIES
Entries can be either academic or journalistic. Feature articles and academic essays should be between 3500 and 6500 words, and theatre or performance reviews between 1500 and 2500 words.

THE REQUIREMENTS
Writings must have been published, in print or online, in the last three years—that is, between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2018. Note that authors must also send a PDF or photocopy of the publication where the articles were published.

THE WINNERS
A three-member, English-language jury will choose three winners. The three winners will each receive a “Critics Award for Reflections on Contemporary Chinese Theatre,” and a monetary prize of 5000 RMB. Winners will also be invited to the award ceremony, to be held in Beijing at the end of October 2019. In addition, the ceremony coincides with both the “Lao She theatre festival,” dedicated to the Chinese playwright of modern classics, and with a conference on “Contemporary Chinese theatre and the critics.” (Exact dates to be announced.) For these, accommodations for the three award winners, for five nights in Beijing, will be covered by the hosts.

THE JURY
The members of the jury are (alphabetically):
Savas Patsalidis (Greece), Lissa Tyler Renaud (U.S.), and Kalina Stefanova (Bulgaria).

THE COMPETITION: English and Chinese
This English-language competition accompanies another, now in progress in China, for which a Chinese jury will award critical pieces previously published in Chinese. The winning pieces will all be published together in a book, for which the English-language pieces will be translated into Chinese, arranged for by the hosts.

ACCEPTANCE PERIOD
To be considered for this Critics Award, send your entries between now and April 1, 2019.
